Hail damage roof repair starts with evidence on the roof, not with a radar screenshot alone. Hail can fracture a shingle mat, knock granules off in a spatter, crack a tile, or dent a metal panel without opening an obvious hole. It can also leave marks on gutters and soft metal while the roof covering still does its job. Those are different outcomes. What we look for
On asphalt, a bruise is often a soft spot in the mat with granules missing in a roughly circular mark, sometimes easier to feel than to see in flat light. Random granule loss in the gutters from age is smoother and more general. On tile and slate, look for fractured edges and pieces on the ground that match the hail size, not old cracks filled with dirt. On metal, dents may be cosmetic on a thick panel and a problem when they open a seam or crack a coating down to the fastener line. Soft metals on box vents and gutters are clues. They are not, by themselves, proof the field must be replaced.
Functional damage and marks that are only marks
Functional damage shortens the roof’s ability to shed water or breaks the mat so the shingle will split. Cosmetic dents that do not open the system are described as cosmetic. We will not call every dent a total loss, and we will not call a bruised, fractured field “just marks” because replacement is inconvenient. The note should be specific enough that you, and anyone you show it to, can see the difference.
Repair is possible when the impacts are limited and the surrounding material can accept new pieces.
