Shingle roofing for steep-slope houses

A shingle roof fails in familiar ways: granule loss, cracked tabs, lifted edges, and leaks at the parts that are not shingles. Architectural shingles and three-tab shingles share the same job and differ in weight, look, and how they lie in wind. Repair and replacement

Shingle roof repair replaces damaged courses, boots, and flashings when the rest of the slope still flexes and holds granules. Matching a discontinued color sometimes means replacing a larger area so the repair is not a bright rectangle. Shingle roof replacement, and the broader roof replacement decision, is the tear-off when the field is brittle, when a second layer is already on the deck, or when leaks no longer share one source.

Details that decide if the shingles work

Underlayment is the backup layer, not a place to save the job. Valleys need a method that does not buckle. Wall flashing needs a kickout so water is not poured behind the siding. Pipe boots crack on a schedule; replacing them during a reroof is cheaper than a ceiling later. Ridge vents only work if soffit intake is open. Nail placement in the right zone keeps tabs from sliding. These are ordinary standards, and they are the difference between a roof that looks new and a roof that stays dry.

Wind can lift a sound-looking tab. That event is storm damage. Hail bruises and granule circles are hail damage. Ordinary age is not either of those. We will say which one we are looking at.

Care after the shingles are on

Keep valleys free of debris, watch for granule piles that suddenly increase, and do not pressure-wash the mineral surface off the shingle. A light maintenance visit catches a lifted edge before a storm finishes the job. If you are unsure the roof has life left, a roof inspection is the cheaper document.

Granules, attics, and the repair that still matches

Some granule loss is the shingle shedding its extra surface in the first seasons. A sudden pile in one downspout, with bald patches on one slope, is wear you can see. Look in the attic under that slope before you buy a coating or a second layer. Stains on the deck mean the mineral surface is no longer the only issue. If the shingles still flex, a targeted repair can replace the bald courses and the flashing that let the water through. If they snap, the honest project is replacement of that slope, with the ridge and any shared valley included so the new courses do not dead-end into brittle ones.

Color match is a conversation, not a guarantee. Sun-faded shingles will not twin a fresh bundle. We will say when a larger area should be replaced so the repair does not read as a patch from the street, and when a small repair is still the right spend because the rest of the roof has years left. That judgment is the point of seeing the roof. It is also why a roof inspection before a sale is more useful than a guess from the listing photo.
